1Pet1:1
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,To Gods elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying1 work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood:
Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by Gods power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1Pet1:13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be
self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus
Christ is revealed. 14As obedient children, do
not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
16for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy.
(Lev11:44-45)
1Pet1:17 Since you call on a Father who judges
each mans work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent
fear. 18For you know that it was not with perishable things
such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed
down to you from your forefathers, 19but with the precious blood of
Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
1Pet1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves
by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one
another deeply, from the heart. 23For you have been born
again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and
enduring word of God. 24For,
All men are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25but the word of the Lord stands forever. (Isa40:6-8)
And this is the word that was preached to you.
1Pet2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice
and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in
your salvation, 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
1Pet2:11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the
world, to abstain from sinful desires, which
war against your soul.
1Pet3:8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony
with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with
blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10For,
Whoever would love life
and see good days
must keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from deceitful speech.
11He must turn from evil and do good;
he must seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. (Psa34:12-16)
1Pet4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his
body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in
his body is done with sin. 2As a result, he does not live the
rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.
3For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose
to do--living in debauchery2, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and
detestable idolatry.
1Pet4:7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and
self-controlled so that you can pray. 8Above
all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
9Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering Gods grace in its various forms. 11If anyone
speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves,
he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be
praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and
ever. Amen.
1Pet5:5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are
older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward
one another, because,
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. (Pro3:34)
6Humble yourselves, therefore, under Gods mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
2Pet1:3 His divine power has given us
everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him
who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has
given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you
may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world
caused by evil desires. 5For this very reason, make every
effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to
perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and
to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in
increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive
in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But if anyone does not
have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been
cleansed from his past sins.
1 - sanctify: to free from sin, purify, and set apart for a
sacred purpose. ^
2 - debauchery: indulgence in pleasure that lacks moral restraint, extreme
indulgence in sensual pleasure. ^
